The LC-12 Backlight Controller is designed to provide the backlight power for the Airbus FCUs or other sensitive avionics.

It complements the LC-25 because it offers 2 independent channels. This is for cases like the FCU where the high supply power of the LC25 is not required. The LC-12 can independently power both lighting power inputs of the FCU for panel legends and LCD backlighting.

Many cockpit builders have tried to use PWM (pulse width modulation) dimming modules for this purpose. While this is the cheapest solution, it is often causing problems. PWM emits a large amount of EMI (high frequency electromagnetic interference) that often causes malfunctions of sensitive equipment like the FCU and MCDUs and disrupts the Arinc communication to this devices. Cheap PWM dimmers usually do not have any protections to prevent OEM panels from damage in case of a malfunction.

The LC-12 controller is specifically designed to avoid this problems. It converts a 12V input voltage to a filtered regulated 0.2-5.1V DC voltage with low electromagnetic interference (EMI). The LC-12 can directly be connected to the potentiometers used in original cockpit panels to control the brightness.

Compared to the LC-25 the LC-12 offers even higher filtering of the output voltage to guarantee that there is no interference with Arinc communication. The LC-12 is also using modern generation converter chips with a high efficiency of more than 90%. Because of this a cooling fan is not required.
